What Is Child Support?

Child support is a payment made by one parent to the other to help cover the cost of raising a child or children. Florida courts generally require parents to provide child support if they have a child or children in common. The Florida child support guidelines help determine the amount of child support based on the parents' incomes and other factors. Parents can agree to a certain amount of child support, but if they do not agree, then a family court judge will decide the amount.

How Is Child Support Calculated in Florida?

There are two types of child support:

  • Basic support is the minimum amount of support that must be paid. It is based on the parents' incomes and the number of children.
  • Additional support is the amount that can be paid above the basic support if the parents' incomes allow it. This is based on the parents' ability to pay.

Child support is based on the parents' incomes, the number of children, and health insurance. The Florida child support guidelines help determine the amount of child support based on the parents' incomes and other factors. Parents can agree to a certain amount of child support, but if they do not agree, then a family court judge will decide the amount.

Factors included in the child support calculation include:

  • Child's needs, such as food, shelter, and clothing
  • Parents' incomes
  • Number of children
  • Child care and education costs
  • Cost of health insurance
  • Child's special needs
  • Cost of extracurricular activities and sports
  • Cost of the child's health care
  • Cost of the child's mental health care and treatment
  • Cost of the child's college education
  • Recurring medical expenses for the child
  • Any other necessary expenses for the child

Parents can agree to a certain amount of child support, but if they do not agree, then a family court judge will decide the amount. Parents can also ask a family court judge to deviate from the Florida child support guidelines if there are special circumstances.
